Velo Vixens FAQ
New here? Curious about how Velo Vixens works? You’re in the right place. Grab a cup of something tasty and have a scroll through our most common questions.
1. Do I need to be an experienced cyclist/hiker/paddler to join?
Not at all. Velo Vixens is for every woman who wants to spend more time outside—from total beginners to seasoned adventurers. We love helping new folks get started and build skills at a pace that feels good. If you can show up with an open mind and a friendly attitude, you’re more than ready.
2. What kinds of activities does the club do?
We like to mix it up so there’s something for everyone. Our calendar typically includes:
- Cycling: social road rides, gravel adventures, and casual spins
- Hiking: from mellow nature walks to more challenging climbs
- Paddling: kayaks, canoes, SUPs, and flatwater days
- Camping: local overnights, weekend getaways, and the occasional longer trip
We’re always open to new ideas, too—members help shape the calendar.
3. I’m nervous about coming to my first event solo — is that normal?
Absolutely. Most of us showed up to our first Velo Vixens event without knowing anyone and feeling a little unsure. The good news: you won’t feel that way for long. We make a point of greeting new faces, introducing you around, and making sure you’re not left standing alone. It’s very common to leave your first event already making plans for the next one with new friends.
4. What do I need to bring to events?
It depends on the activity, and we always spell it out in the event details so there’s no guesswork. As a quick guide:
- Cycling: A bike in safe working order, a helmet (required), water, and any snacks or layers you like.
- Hiking: Sturdy, comfortable shoes, weather-appropriate layers, water, and a small backpack if you have one.
- Paddling: We may be able to help with gear or rentals. Just check the event to see what you’ll need to bring.
- Camping: Gear needs vary by trip. We can help you figure out options if you’re missing something.
If you’re ever unsure, just reach out before the event and we’ll happily talk it through.
5. How do I find out about upcoming events?
Once you’re a member, you’ll be able to see everything we’ve got planned. We share upcoming rides, hikes, paddles, and trips through:
- Our member event calendar
- Our email newsletter with events and updates
- Our social media channels for reminders, photos, and last-minute changes
You can use whichever works best for you—many members like to check the calendar and keep an eye on email.
6. Is there a membership fee?
Yes. Membership helps us cover things like insurance, permits, trip planning, and keeping the club running smoothly. For current rates, what’s included, and how to sign up, please visit our Join page.
7. What if I can’t keep up with the group?
You’re not alone in worrying about this, and we’re very intentional about making our outings feel welcoming, not competitive. Rides and hikes are clearly labeled by pace and difficulty, and we often break into smaller groups so everyone can move at a speed that feels comfortable. We regroup regularly, we communicate, and we don’t drop people. The goal is shared adventure and support, not setting records.
8. Can I bring a friend who isn’t a member?
We love when members share Velo Vixens with their friends. Our guest policy can vary by event type and size, so the best thing to do is check the specific event details or get in touch with us ahead of time. We’ll let you know what’s possible and how your friend can join in.
